EDHA Gets New Deputy Speaker, As Rt Hon. Maria Edeko Resigns Over Party’s Minority Status

Edo state house of Assembly has elected a new Deputy Speaker,  Rt. Hon. Osamwoyi Atu,  to replace Rt Hon. Marie Edeko representing Esan North East 11 constituency who resigned due to the PDP's minority status in the House. 


The House  elected Rt Hon Osamwoyi Atu member representing Orhionmwon East Constituency after a nomination by Member representing Akoko-Edo One constituency, Rt Hon Yekini Idaiye and seconded by member representing Uhunmwode Constituency Hon Kaycee Osamwonyi, in the absence of any counter nomination,the Speaker, Rt Hon Blessing Sheriff Agbebaku called for voice vote .

In his acceptance speech ,The new Deputy Speaker thanked the Speaker and members for the confidence reposed in him, promising to support the Speaker towards ensuring a vibrant and dynamic legislature. 

Rt Hon Osamwonyi Atu was administered the Oath of office by the clerk of the House Alhaji Yahaya Audu Omogbai. 

Earlier in a resignation speech, the immediate past Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Marie Edeko said In view of recent political trends in the House ,she was voluntarily resigning her position to allow for fairness, equitable sharing of political office amongst the three senatorial districts in the state. 

Rt Hon Edeko also appealed  and advocated for the inclusion of women in the leadership space at the legislature. 

In what seemed like a valedictory session for the out gone Deputy Speaker, members Eulogized her for her role as the mother of the house,Chairman tenders board and in her capacity as a vibrant, dynamic and intelligence which she brought to the fore in her activities. 

The members who included the majority leader Hon Jonathan Ibhamawu, member representing Esan North East I, Hon Adeh Isibor, member representing Egor, Hon Natasha Osawaru, member representing Esan South East, Hon Sunny Ojiezele,member representing Etsako East, Hon. Kingsley Ugabi, member representing Oredo West Hon. Edosa Osaro, member representing Ovia North-East 1 Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian, member representing Akoko-Edo II, Hon. Donald Okogbe, and member representing Etsako West 11, Hon Gani Akokhia all paid glowing tributes to the Outgone Deputy Speaker commending her for her unwavering dedication, passion,integrity, consistency and effectiveness in her duties. 

This culminated in a motion by the Majority Leader of the House Hon Jonathan Ibhamawu for the retention of the benefits of the Deputy Speaker's office to Rt. Hon. Marie Edeko, a motion seconded by Minority Leader Hon Charity Aiguobarueghian .
